About Kalihi, Honolulu, Hawaii, United States

Kalihi is a historic and culturally rich neighborhood in Honolulu, located west of downtown on the island of Oʻahu. The name “Kalihi” derives from the Hawaiian word ka lihi, meaning “the edge,” reflecting its position between the mountains and the sea. Traditionally, Kalihi was an ahupuaʻa—a land division stretching from the mountains to the ocean—and is divided into Kalihi Uka (upper), Kalihi Waena (middle), and Kalihi Kai (lower).

Historically, Kalihi served as a residential area for middle- and upper-class Hawaiian, Chinese, and Portuguese residents in the early 1900s. Later, it became home to sugar plantation workers from Japan, Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Korea, and Samoa. Today, Kalihi is recognized as one of Honolulu’s last working-class neighborhoods, offering close proximity to downtown and Waikīkī jobs.

The cost of living in Kalihi is relatively high, with a cost of living index of 185 compared to the national average of 100. Despite this, Kalihi remains more affordable than many other Honolulu neighborhoods.

Kalihi hosts several educational institutions, including Kalihi Elementary School, Kalihi Waena Elementary School, Kalihi Uka Elementary School, Kalihi Kai Elementary School, Dole Middle School, King David Kalākaua Middle School, and Farrington High School.
